To build on our work in class, and following our visit to the Black Country Museum here are 3 activities below. You must complete 2 (number 1 plus number 2 or 3):
1. A report similar to that by Charles Booth on town conditions in the Industrial Revolution. You need to include:
Number of people living in that area/ number of people to a house
Types of houses and what the houses were like inside and out. ž
Conditions in that area (sewage, drinking water and privies)
The spread of Cholera
THIS WILL BE DONE PARTLY IN CLASS.
2. A piece of writing set in the Industrial Revolution in the 19th Century about working conditions - such as letter or diary entry by a worker/child labourer/ mine worker. This should include detail about their working life – types of duties at work, conditions, treatment by the employer, length of the working day, pay etc. You could also include living conditions as seen at the museum here too. (Approx 300-500 words)
(Focus – empathy skills & factual knowledge)
3. A fact file or encyclopaedia entry about the impact of change during the Industrial Revolution, focusing on one aspect. (Approx 300-500 words, and must be handwritten but may include pictures). Suggestions for this could be :-
a. A new invention during the industrial revolution
b. An influential individual
c. Review of the museum as a place of learning about life during the Industrial Revolution (but not an account of your visit eg we saw this…..) It should be an objective account of the site & how life changed at this time.
(Focus - change & organisation skills)
THIS IS DUE THE FIRST LESSON OF YOUR EXAM WEEK.
You are a member of Sir Robert Peel’s Conservative government in 1842. You are unimpressed with the Mines Report and want to gain support for legislation on improvement on conditions with the mines.
Design a poster in your book to advertise a rally (speech) you will hold. Consider – where will you hold this talk? What (specifically) will you want to talk about?
