I learnt that Stalin did not force people to work but they came because they needed the work, or because they wanted to. Sometimes they knew what they were working for but others they imagined it differently and Russia hid the truth behind the conditions.
I learnt that the peasants working there were treated as if they weren't people, more like they were animals. And for example if someone died during work, they cared about as much as they would've if they'd stepped on an ant.
I learnt that stalin took advantage of the peasants working for him ant replaced the people who died with other peasants and just swept dead bodies under a rug.
The conditions in the coal mines were terrible. They had to stay in make shift barracks, food was scarce and they didnt have enough wood/coal to keep themselves warm.
I learnt that people travelling to Magnitogorsk were happy to go but once they got there conditions were very different to what they imagined because the city was basically a building site with no roads and sewage pipes.
I learned that people were let down after moving to magnitogorsk, it was both not what they expected and disappointing, the city was minute and people had to live in poor conditions such as make shift barracks.
